| Scouting Report |
| One of the favorites to be nabbed as the No. 1 overall pick, Stafford possesses all the attributes needed in a franchise quarterback: prototypical size, a rifle for an arm and a pedigree from a big-time school. Stafford is leaving Georgia after his junior year, but last season proved to be the culmination of steady development and solid coaching. His yards passing went up from 1,749 to 2,523 to 3,459 and his touchdown passes increased from 7 to 19 to 25 as coach Mark Richt gradually made him the centerpiece of a potent Bulldogs offense. The 25 scores were a school record, as were the 3,499 yards of total offense he accumulated in 2008. Stafford went out with a bang as he was named the Capital One Bowl MVP after throwing for 250 yards and three TDs in a 24-12 win over Michigan State, capping a 10-3 campaign. But the three-loss season was a bit of a disappointment, as the Bulldogs finished '07 at 12-1 and ranked No. 2, and, based largely on their quarterback play, entered '08 as the preseason No. 1. But it was more of a porous defense - Georgia gave up an average of 45 points in those defeats - than Stafford's struggles which was responsible for the team's downfall. Often overlooked in the SEC because of the great success of Florida's Tim Tebow, Stafford projects as a significantly better-suited pro, and he seems to be an ideal fit for a winless Detroit Lions club in dire need of a superstar behind center. |
