| Underwood was all over most draft boards after an outstanding junior season, but a subpar senior year caused him to slide down the charts. Underwood was a first team All-Big East selection in 2007, when he finished with 1,100 yards (second-best single-season total in Rutgers history) and 65 receptions (third-best in school history). He also had seven touchdown receptions. His senior season was a bit of a disappointment, though, as he caught 40 passes for 494 yards and five TDs. He had two or fewer catches in four of his 12 games in 2008, and had no more than 88 yards in a contest after six 100-yard games in 2007. Although his production slipped, Underwood has the necessary skill to make an NFL roster. He ran a 4.41 40 at the draft combine - the sixth-fastest among wide receivers. He also had the second-best vertical jump among his position at 41 1/2 inches, and ranked second in the broad jump (10'9"), first in the 3-cone drill (6.62 seconds) and third in the 20-yard shuttle (4.11 seconds). While he has excellent speed and sure hands, Underwood doesn't have great upper-body strength and may have trouble getting off the line against pro defensive backs. With his strength an issue, NFL teams may try using Underwood as a returner because of his great quickness and vision. He likely will be selected on the second day of the draft. |
